ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Komotini - the capital of the periphery of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace - is the administrative, commercial, economic, cultural and transport center, which is located on the railway Thessaloniki - Alexandroupolis.

The university was created in July 1973 and began to function in the 1974-1975 academic year. It is named after the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who was originally from the city of Abdera in Thrace. The University currently has twenty faculties in four cities - nine in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupoli and two in Orestiada.
