ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

Comenius University in Bratislava is the oldes and biggest university in the Slovak republic. Established in 1919, the university draws on the tradition of Academia Istropolitana that was founded in 1465 in Bratislava by Matthias Corvinus, the King of Hungary. Since its founding the university has ranked among the best educational institution on the national level and it has become an internationally recognised centre of scientific study and research. Being the most comprehensive provider of classical university education in Slovakia, Comenius university has retained the status of the Slovak national university.

Comenius University in Bratislava has 13 faculties and serves more than 22,000 students each year within all three degree study programmes, almost 20,000 of whom are full-time students. Comenius University offers diverse study programmes encompassing a broad range of human knowledge - from medicine, humanities and social sciences, to natural sciences, mathematics and theology.  

In 1992, Comenius University became the first institution to take part in the UNESCO Chairs programme. This scheme draws together the expertise of universities around the globe to tackle human rights problems. There are now more than 700 institutions involved in UNESCO Chairs, of which Comenius University is still an integral part. Comenius University in Bratislava is highly international, with over 2,000 international students and over 300 bilateral exchange agreements with partner universities.
 
A significant number of Slovakia’s politicians are alumni of the university, including the prime minister, Robert Fico, and deputy prime minister Miroslav Laj??ák.
